The Jungle Book was a HUGE success!

There are DVDs available to purchase ($21) at http://virtualmediasc.com/schoolevents.php, but the deadline is FRIDAY, MAY 1st. The DVDs are professionally done and of high quality. The DVDs will be delivered to the school.

Richland Two Child Development will be taking applications until May 15 from everyone who has a child who will be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2015.

The Month of the Military Child!

We had special visitors join us this morning on the morning show from the Army Reserve 81st Regional Support Command from Fort Jackson, SC.  Our visitors came to honor and support our Military Students.  Students with deployed parents were honored with an Operation Military Kids Hero Backpack!  RTE is so honored to have these students as Aviators.  We tremendously thank each and every parent and student for their service!

Transitions

As we face the expected transitions that the end of each year brings,

I want to share that RTE is facing a transition at the end of this week.

Our exceptional Receptionist, Teri Anton, is moving up the street 

to work at Blythewood High School.  Ms. Anton has been a member

of the RTE family for many years in various roles: Special Ed Asst (1 yr),

Media Asst (5.5 yrs), Receptionist (2 yrs),  and most importantly as a

supportive parent (9 yrs).  She will be sorely missed and we are glad

she won't be too far away!

I am excited to introduce our newest Aviator family member, Ms. 

Lisa Mayo.  She will begin her duties on Monday, 4/27.  Ms. Mayo

has been a valued employee of Lake Carolina since 2011.  She

brings to us a wealth of experience working with the children and the 

public.    

Please keep in mind that it will be necessary for all of us to use our 

LIFESKILL of patience as Ms. Mayo learns our unique school culture.

I know you will join me in welcoming her into our RTE family.

You're Invited! RTE Volunteer Forum

The PTO and school administration would like to cordially invite you to our Volunteer Forum on Monday, April 27 at 6:00pm in the Media Center.

Round Top has been very fortunate to have a history of an active and involved PTO and corp of parent volunteers. We would like to continue that tradition by energizing our current group of volunteers and expanding our volunteer base by ensuring that volunteering is a viable option for all parents. We realize that time is often in short supply for parents these days, so we'd like to use this Volunteer Forum to discuss new ideas and approaches to volunteering at RTE. Is there a better way to organize our PTO board? Is there a more efficient way to use volunteers' time? What are the school's volunteer needs and how can parents help in meeting those needs?

We want you to be a part of this discussion as Round Top soars into our second decade of quality teaching and learning! Please RSVP to rtepto@gmail.com to let us know if you can attend on April 27th.

Poem in Your Pocket Day!

Poem in Your Pocket Day is celebrated each April during National Poetry Month.  Today, students in all grade levels enjoyed a Poetry Slam in the cafeteria during lunch.  Students read some of their favorite poets and some shared original poetry they had written.  Each student who read during lunch received a small book-themed token of appreciation for their LIFESKILL of Courage and for Synergizing with their schoolmates!  

Tyler Skiff (pictured below), stopped by Ms. Tucker's office to share his poem:

I love having fun in the summer,

But not being at Round Top will be kind of a bummer.

Mrs. Powell (mother of Jack, Kelvey and Sidney), shared this original poem:

Good morning, Powell kids

Wipe that sleep from your eyes!

Today is going to be great

Full of adventure and surprise!

And mom gets to go too.

To watch excited first graders

Puppetry Artist in Residence at RTE

Puppetry Artist, Becky Becker, has been working with Art Classes this week. Students have been creating puppets and using them to perform with in class. The students have used the LIFESKILLs of Creativity and Resourcefulness this week. We have watched students SYNERGIZE as they act out with their puppets in small groups. They learn how important it is to work together to get the best results! They also have been Seeking First to Understand Before They are Understood by taking turns as puppetry artists!

Round Top Goes Purple!

April 15th was "Purple Up for Military Kids" in 

Richland District 2.  Here are some pictures of Round Top teachers and students showing their support!

Test Preparation

Each year, and in every grade, students participate in a variety of district and state mandated tests, such as DRA, MAP, ACT Aspire, and SC PASS (just to name a few!). There is no special way to get ready for these tests. However, you can prepare your child for testing by sticking to already established routines, including:

• Reading every day. Books are great, but don't forget other options, such as comic books, magazines, newspapers, or even restaurant menus! 
• Completing homework daily.  Now that the weather is getting warm, the kids want to stay outside and play for longer periods of time. At school we teach our students to Begin with the End in Mind, which means "work first, then play." Helping your child to balance their work and play time so that homework is completed every day is a way to make sure they continue to practice the skills they have learned.
• Providing encouragement. "Positive Talk" about school and testing will help your child to feel motivated during a time of year when the work gets more difficult. Engaging in positive talk daily will help your child to not feel overwhelmed as school begins to feel more challenging.
• Getting adequate exercise and rest. Did you know exercise and adequate sleep help with focus and energy? Making a plan to provide daily exercise and a regular bed time each evening will help your child to do their personal best. P.S. - Don't forget about our morning Fun Run!!!

Remember, testing only provides a "snapshot" of how a student performs on a particular day. Test results are only one measure of your child's learning. Preparing for every school day will ensure your child's school success!

Reminder... BMS Orientation

Blythewood Middle School is having their annual BMS Pathways to Success on Thursday, April 16th, 6:00 p.m., beginning in the school gym. The previous orientation in January provided information for those families considering expanded choice, while this program will be focusing on making a successful transition for those students and their parents who will be attending Blythewood Middle this fall.  You will learn about summer opportunities like the BMS JumpStart Camp; receive information about the summer reading activity, the 6th grade supply list, and information about enrichment offerings.  Additionally, you will find out what Charger Kick-Off is all about and how you can receive information and keep in touch.  There will be brief sessions you can choose to attend on how to help your child with math at home, encouraging your reluctant reader, as well as learning about the adolescent child.  The evening provides an opportunity to visit the 6th grade area classrooms and meet the teachers. Our goal is to provide tools for a smooth transition from elementary school to the middle school.  We are looking forward to meeting and working with you soon.

Muller Road Middle School Parent Night

Muller Road Middle is hosting a rising 6th grade parent night on Thursday, April 23rd. Students accepted to LA@M (Leadership Academy Magnet) will meet at 6:00 pm in the media center. All remaining 6th graders will meet at 6:30 pm in the gym. We look forward to seeing you there!

Earth Day Recycling Contest

Student Council's Earth Day Recycling Contest runs today through April 20th.  The theme is If It's Paper. All recycled items must be made of recycled paper in some way.  The size of the finished item must be 11x17 or less.  All entries are due by April 20th.  The contest is open to all students, with winners chosen in each grade level, and there will be a teacher category as well.
