September is Attendance Awareness Month

Why Attendance Matters...

Good attendance is a habit that children need to learn early. Attendance is related to a child’s
ability to be successful in all areas of school: academics, behavioral and social. Any time a child
misses a day of school, it is a missed opportunity to learn. Regardless of the reason a child is out
of school, they are missing instruction.

School attendance is one of the most important factors related to school success and graduation. The research below provides some useful and very interesting information.
  • Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year.  Half of the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. (Olson, 2014)
  • Chronic absenteeism and habitual truancy are important predictors of school performance, including high school graduation.  Chronic absenteeism can reduce the likelihood of post-secondary enrollment. (Balfanz & Byrnes, 2012)
  • By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.(Balfanz & Byrnes, 2012)
  • By middle and high school, chronic absences are a leading warning sign that a student will drop out. (Balfanz & Byrnes, 2012)
  • Students who are routinely absent are also more likely to drop out of high school prior to earning their high school diploma. (Spradlin, Stephanie, Chen, Shi, Chen, Han, & Cierniak, 2012)
  • Students who are chronically absent from school face an increase chance of future unemployment. (Lochmiller, 2013)
If you have any questions regarding your child's attendance, please feel free to call Round Top's attendance secretary, Teri Anton at 691-8676.

Thank You Round Top Family!

Thank you to all the parents and family members who attended our 2014 Parent Orientation from 6:00-7:30 last night.  Two of the most important cornerstones of a successful school experience are parent involvement and clear communication.  We encourage you to stay involved throughout the school year and maintain an open line of communication with your child's teacher(s).  If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please share those with us!  We look forward to another personal best year, so please visit and volunteer often.

Would you like to join the Cub Scouts?

Transportation Changes

At the beginning of the school year, parents reported to teachers how each student will arrive and depart from school everyday.  Teachers and Administrators rely on this information to be accurate to ensure students are accounted for, and updated with changes as needed.  Now that our After School Enrichment programs are beginning, we are noticing many children whose transportation arrangements have changed, without being communicated to the teachers.  The time-consuming process of verifying changes with parents during dismissal affects everyone when it delays bus departures or slows down the car-rider line.

Please review page 3 of the RTE Student Handbook, which states "Changes in transportation (ie. how your child is going home in the afternoon) can only be accepted by handwritten note. Leaving a voice mail message or emailing a message to any teacher/ employee is not an option."  Please send teachers a note for each and every day your child will not be departing from school in their usual manner.  If you have questions about this school procedure, please call Clarissa Bennett (RTE Transportation Contact) at 691-8676 ext 3020.  Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring our students' safe travels from school!

Home-School Communication

On September 4th we greeted hundreds of families who attended our Parent Orientation. This annual event is just one way schools connect and communicate with families.  Home-school communication is essential to student success. So now that parents have had a chance to "get connected" with teachers - it's time to "stay connected" with the school!

Note: All parents received this Parent Checklist at our Orientation event.  Parents who were not in attendance will receive this green checklist when their child's communication folder/ binder comes home with weekly papers from the teacher.

The SIC Needs You!

Are you wanting to become more involved?

Here is a way you can get involved in your child’s school and help make a difference.
The School Improvement Council is a group of parents, teachers, community members, and administrators who meet monthly to advise the principal and discuss ways to improve the school.
Don’t have a lot of time?  No problem! We meet once a month after work hours at the school. The SIC is a perfect way to become involved in the school when you already have a busy schedule.
Please submit your nomination and a brief bio to Teri Anton at tanton@richland2.org by 3 p. m. Monday, September 8th
Elections will be held next Tuesday - Thursday, September 9 - 11th. Winners will be announced Friday, September 12th.
