Music in Our Schools Month

Did you know it is Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM)? The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. (Music in Our Schools Month-www.nafme.org). Visit this TedEd lesson to learn more about music and the brain: Music Benefits Your Brain
"Music training in childhood fundamentally alters the nervous system such that neural changes persist in adulthood after auditory training has ceased.”

ABC School

Round Top Elementary is an ABC (Arts in the Basic Curriculum) School.
We are awarded a grant from The ABC Project, The South Carolina Arts Commission and the South Carolina Arts Alliance. This has been in place since 2005. This year, we have hosted an Artist-in-Residency by Hawk Hurst. Mr. Hurst is a storyteller, drama teacher and an actor. He worked with students in October 2014 on the art of telling good stories.
Today, March 13, 2015 we hosted Strings Celebrations with Mr. Ken Lankford. This is a
Multi-Cultural Musical performance for Grades K - 5.
They taught our students about different instruments and music from all around the world. In April, 2015 we will have our final Artist-in-Residency: Ms. Becky Becker who is a puppet maker, art teacher and teaches acting with the puppets. We are grateful for all the arts' opportunities we can provide for our students.
Thanks again to the ABC Project!

Calling All Professionals!

Round Top Elementary School’s Annual Career Day will be held on April 23, 2015 from 9:00-2:45 with lunch included.  As a school counselor my job is to educate students about career awareness and exploration.  The best way to do this is by partnering with our Blythewood community.  If you are interested in volunteering for this awesome opportunity please contact me for more information.  You are never to young to begin thinking about what you want to be when you grow up!

BMS Pathways to Success

Blythewood Middle School is having their annual
BMS Pathways to Success on Thursday, April 24th, 6:00 p.m.
beginning in the school gym.

The previous orientation in January provided information for those families considering expanded choice, while this program will be focusing on making a successful transition for those students and their parents who will be attending Blythewood Middle this fall.  You will learn about summer opportunities like the BMS JumpStart Camp; receive information about the summer reading activity, the 6th grade supply list, and information about enrichment offerings.  Additionally, you will find out what Charger Kick-Off is all about and how you can receive information and keep in touch.  There will be brief sessions you can choose to attend on how to help your child with math at home, encouraging your reluctant reader, as well as learning about the adolescent child.  The evening provides an opportunity to visit the 6th grade area classrooms and meet the teachers. Our goal is to provide tools for a smooth transition from elementary school to the middle school.
We are looking forward to meeting and working with you soon.

State Testing for 3rd-5th Grade Students

New laws passed by the South Carolina General Assembly have resulted in new tests that will be administered during the spring of 2015 throughout our state. Students in Grades 3-8 will take a new, timed test this school year called ACT Aspire.

In Richland Two, our students will take the paper and pencil ACT Aspire tests for writing, English, reading and mathematics. They will not take the optional ACT Aspire test for science that some districts may use. This new test will help teachers understand where their students are succeeding and where extra help or academic focus is needed. By having a better understanding of a student’s skills, abilities, and knowledge, parents and teachers can determine what students need to know to be successful in school in the future.

Students in Grades 4-8 will continue to take SCPASS for science and social studies. Schools have the option of administering SCPASS as an online test or a paper and pencil test. Third-graders will not take any state tests for science and social studies.

For more information on ACT Aspire, visit the Richland Two Assessment Web page by clicking here or the S.C. Department of Education’s ACT Web page by clicking here.
