Image result for poem in your pocket day

The media center sponsored our annual Poem in Your Pocket Day today.  Students who had poems in their pocket received "smelly" bookmarks as a treat!  Thanks to all of our RTE Authors who took the Initiative to pen original poetry.  Check out our Twitter feed for pictures @rteflightstatus.  Here is a sampling of some of our writing talent:

School Daze
South Carolina state requires
180 days of math, ELA, and art
From the day it begins in August
That's when the countdown starts

Making it through the first 9 weeks
Oh what a struggle to stay on time
getting used to a brand new schedule
with homework and bedtime

Rolling towards November and December
Vacation days are looking bright
looking forward to sleeping late again
and not a math problem in sight

A new year means that half a year is gone
These nine weeks are a piece of cake
I know that coming up real soon
Will be the great spring break.

Spring time is rolling around
All all this warm weather makes us want to be with friends
But them we have all that testing
When will it ever end?

So we can all be excited for summer
Sleeping late and swimming pools
But first we all have to get through
Twenty-four more days of school.

The Baker
I wish I was a baker
because a baker's never down.
I wish I was a baker
because a baker never frowns.
I wish I was a baker
because a baker's not a clown.

Kindness
Kindness is great,
Kindness is love,
You don't know it until you find it,
kindness is like a ballroom full of magic,
Kindness is a dream full of love.

Trees
In trees dancing on a windy day,
When sky is wrinkled and elephants grey
Poetry!  Poetry!
Can be found in out and all around.
But take a look inside your heart,
that's where a poem truly likes to start.

Apples
A red and ripe fruit
Pastures are where they are found
Pastures are where farmers pick them
Love to eat them.
end of the day
I like to eat
apple at dinner.

You just don't scare me at all.

Old Cans
Old Cans
wire and old junk
is good if you
want to make some sculpture
You can make a cow or horse
or maybe even a vulture.
You can stick them together
or tie them with some string
and if it doesn't look like
a real animal at lease it will
look like something.

Dinosaur, dinosaur,

Think Ahead Thursday...

Each week I host "Think Ahead Thursdays" on WING-TV. I talk with students about what it means to Begin with the End in Mind by "thinking ahead" - having a plan. These talks focus on AVID strategies teachers are using in class, including: time management, making plans, setting goals, and taking action to meet those goals.

This week, we are "thinking ahead" as we plan and prepare for SC READY and SC PASS state testing. Here are some tips I shared with students on WING-TV during the past two weeks:

  • Read as much as possible everyday. RTE recommends 30 minutes daily.
  • Complete homework every night. Homework is how you practice what you have learned.
  • Talk to your teacher about things you don't understand. Ask questions in class!
  • Get plenty of rest each night. The National Sleep Foundation state that children ages 6-13 need 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night! Read more...
  • Exercise everyday. RTE students can start with Fun Run at 7:30 AM.
  • Have a positive attitude. Be a cheerleader for your classmates, and they will be a cheerleader to encourage you!
Parents, you can help RTE prepare for testing by talking with your child(ren) about these things at home. We thank you for your support!

SC READY (3rd, 4th, and 5th grades)
Tuesday, April 26th - ELA Day 1
Wednesday, April 27th - ELA Day 2
Thursday, April 28th - Math

SC PASS (4th and 5th grades)

Blythewood Middle School Orientation

Blythewood Middle School is having their annual BMS Pathways to Success on Tuesday, April 19th, 6:00 p.m., beginning in the school gym. The previous orientation in January provided information for those families considering expanded choice, while this program will be focusing on making a successful transition for those students and their parents who will be attending Blythewood Middle this Fall.  You will learn about summer opportunities like the BMS JumpStart Camp, BMS Charger Pride Summer Enrichment and afterschool program; receive information about summer reading activity, the 6th grade supply list, and information about enrichment offerings.  Additionally, you will find out what Charger Kick-Off is all about and how you can receive information and keep in touch.  The evening provides an opportunity to visit the 6th grade area classrooms and meet the teachers. Our goal is to provide tools for a smooth transition from elementary school to the middle school.  We are looking forward to meeting and working with you soon.

Volunteer Spots Available for EAR Reading Program

Image result for quotes regarding reading

RTE is looking for volunteers* to take part in a new volunteer based program at Round Top, called EAR.

EAR stands for Encourage A Reader.  It is a volunteer based program in which volunteers will read one on one with a student for 15 minutes a week.  The students that will participate in the program are selected by the teachers.  These students may simply just need some extra reading time, encouragement, assistance etc.  It is designed to encourage a student to enjoy the wonderful world of reading.

"The Journey of a Lifetime starts with the turning of a page...Rachel Anders"

This program makes does make a difference in a students life.  And it's simple.  Volunteers can listen to the student read, take turns reading with the student, or simply read to the student.

We would like to invite you to an informal meeting where you can find out more information regarding this program on Friday, April 8, at 8:30am.  Please feel free to contact Tracy Deets with any questions regarding EAR.  tadeets@yahoo.com

* Please note, all volunteers must have completed the Secure Volunteer process to work one on one with a student.  If you are not registered for this, please contact Mrs. Butler for more information.  anbutler@richland2.org
