Child Development Parent Workshop Oct. 1st

Join our Parent Educator, Liz Sakarcan, to learn more about "Becoming Brain Smart!"

Child Development parents will learn how the brain receives information and reacts to it , which is so helpful in understanding behavior, getting cooperation and fostering optimal learning. People, kids and adults alike, do our best when we are calm, emotionally safe, encouraged and nurtured. This parent meeting gives great tips and info to parents on a child's social emotional well being and giving relief to parents, based on brain science as outlined by Dr. Becky Bailey,'s Conscious Discipline, Loving Guidance framework."

This Child Development Parent Workshop will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 6:00 PM in the Multi-Purpose Room. See you there!

Attendance Matters: Update #3

Here is your Attendance Update for the week of 9/14/15-9/18/15:

  • 22 days of school completed
  • 43 students absent
  • 35 students Tardy to school (not seated in class by 8:10 AM)
  • 41 early dismissal (leaving before 2:15 PM)

Did you know?  All RTE Buses arrive by 7:45 AM. Knowing that, it is easy to figure out that students who arrive tardy to school are car riders.  We often hear from parents that students arrive late due to traffic congestion in the mornings. While the traffic issues along Rimer Pond Road are not within the RTE's "circle of control," following our car rider procedures can help everyone get through the drop off line more quickly. We need YOUR help!

Reminders:

  • Do not block the area with the X as you come into the parking lot (the first blue sign). This creates a space for people who are not dropping students off to bypass the line to park, including school employees.
  • Students should exit their car starting at the blue sign in front of the Kindergarten playground (see picture). This allows up to 14 cars to unload at one time, moving the entire car rider line through the parking lot more quickly.
  • Older students should not wait for someone to open their doors, if they are able to open the door on their own. We specifically ask 3rd - 5th grade students to exit their cars independently. There are adults on duty to assist as needed.
  • Do not drop off before seeing an adult on duty at 7:30 AM.
Tips & Hints:
  • Try to leave home 5 minutes earlier than you usually do. You'll be surprised at the difference you'll see in community traffic at 7:15 AM (less congested) versus 7:20 AM (very congested).
  • 1st and 2nd grade students who exit their cars in front of the Kindergarten playground are actually closer to their classes!
  • Allow your child to ride the bus. Buses are noticeably less full in the mornings than in the afternoons. If your family lives in the attendance zone, allowing your child to ride the bus can help you skip the car rider traffic altogether! Find your child's bus route and register here!
Attendance and Transportation...you may ask "what's the connection?" Consider this: if your child arrives 15 minutes late to school once every week for the entire school year, they will have missed over 1 full day of instruction! Imagine how that gap grows if your child is late more than once a week. Don't forget...Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

STEM magazine

Check out this magazine link.  It is  an awesome on-line magazine we have subscribed to again this year.  Every month I find super interesting articles.  This month I would like to draw your attention to four in particular that support our mission & vision here at RTE:
How the Brain Works
Math, Music & Movement
Every Career is STEM
Fear!
The last article is especially interesting as we find many students at RTE carry a significant amount of  anxiety to succeed.  It is vital that we equip our children with the necessary skills to handle stressful situations.  Our Lifelong Guidelines, LIFESKILLS and 7 Habits are all important tools for navigating the stress that comes with the internal and external expectations we face each day.
I'd love to hear your feedback on any or all of the articles.  enJOY!

Attendance Matters at RTE! Update #2:

Here is your Attendance Update for the week of 9/8/15 through 9/11/15:
  • 17 days of school completed
  • 26 students Tardy to school (not seated in class by 8:10 AM)
  • 25 students signed out for Early Dismissal (leaving before 2:15 PM)
  • 43 students Absent
While these numbers have slightly decreased since last week, we hope to see these numbers drop even lower! Consider this...

Imagine what your day would be like if you arrived at work late? Would starting off schedule cause you to "get behind" in your daily routine?  The First 30 minutes of school may be the most important time of the school day for students too!  From 8:00 AM until 8:30 AM, students are doing the following each day:
  • unpacking book bags
  • returning homework and signed papers/ letters from home
  • writing down assignments for the day in their agenda books
  • organizing their materials for the day, such as sharpening pencils
  • ordering lunch for the day
  • having their attendance recorded by their teacher
  • tracking their personal attendance on their data sheet
  • starting morning work
  • and more!
RTE opens its doors to students beginning at 7:30 AM every day. The first bell rings at 8:00 AM, and the tardy bell rings at 8:10 AM. We encourage all students to be in their homeroom class by 8:00 AM so that they can start their First 30 minutes of the day the right way! Remember - students who Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Attendance Matters at RTE! Update #1

Here is your Attendance Update for the week of 8/31/15 through 9/4/2015:

  • 13 days of school completed
  • 31 students Tardy to school (not in class by 8:10 AM)
  • 68 students signed out for Early Dismissal (signed out before 2:15 PM)
  • 27 of the 68 Early Dismissals were for Friday alone!
  • 52 students Absent

While we understand that some absences, late arrivals and early dismissals are unavoidable, it is important that we avoid these situations as much as possible. Here are some tips to help ensure your child has good attendance all year long:

  1. Align doctor's appointments and family vacations with the school calendar. Avoid extended vacations that require your child to miss school.
  2. Schedule a regular bedtime and morning routine. Young children need 9-11 hours of sleep. Older children need 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep.
  3. No cell phones, video games, and computers at least 30 minutes before going to bed.
  4. Pack lunches and pick out clothes the night before.
  5. Most importantly, be the example for your child. Show them that you value good school attendance and that you won't allow anyone to miss school unless they are truly sick.
Stay tuned for our next Attendance Matters update!

RTE Stands Against Bullying!

For the next three weeks during classroom guidance our students in Kindergarten through 5th grade will be learning about our district policies and school procedures regarding bullying.

Students will learn about bullying behaviors as well as the different types of bullying (Emotional, Relational, Cyber, and Physical.)

Students will learn that they should report bullying to the nearest adult at school right away and not to wait.  They will understand the difference between being a tattletale and being a reporter.  A reporter keeps everyone safe.

District policies, school procedures, and our Steps to Respect curriculum enable us to be proactive about bullying and keep all of our RTE students safe!
